Douglas C. Yearley was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1936. He received his bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from Cornell University in 1958 and attended the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. He joined Phelps Dodge in 1960 as Director of Research and has held several key management positions during his 35-year career with the company. He was named Chairman and CEO in 1989 and assumed the additional responsibilities of President in 1991.

Mr. Yearley is recognized as one of the people responsible for the revival of Phelps Dodge during the 1980s. His industry leadership is exemplified by his efforts through the International Copper Association, which he currently chairs, to oversee research and development and the marketing of new long-term uses for copper.

Mr. Yearley was recognized as the “Copper Man of the Year” in 1993 and chairs the Mineral Resource Alliance. He is also active in a wide variety of civic and professional groups, and serves on the boards of several major corporations and charitable organizations.

Under Mr. Yearley’s leadership, Phelps Dodge has expanded its resource base in the United States and abroad. It has capitalized on new technology, allowing the company to become one of the lowest cost producers in the world.
