G. Robert Durham

1989 Inductee into American Mining Hall of Fame

G. Robert Durham graduated from Purdue University in 1951 and spent his early business career in the aluminum industry. He joined Phelps Dodge in 1967 when it acquired an aluminum products manufacturer of which he was President. Mr. Durham was elected Chairman of Phelps Dodge International Corporation in 1977, Vice President of Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1980, Senior Vice President in 1982, President and Chief Operation Officer in 1985, and Chairman and President effective February 1, 1987. He retired from Phelps Dodge on May 3, 1989.

Mr. Durham serves as a director of Manufacturers Hanover Corporation and Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company and as a trustee of Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. He is a former director of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Board of the Copper Development Association, Vice Chairman of the American Mining Congress, and member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the International Copper Research Association, Inc.

The professional accomplishments of Mr. Durham's distinguished career have been recognized by the Financial World's 1987 award as the "CEO of the Year" and the Copper Club's "Copper Man-of-the-Year" award in 1988. He was also recognized in 1988 with the "Executive of the Year" award from the University of Arizona for having made a significant contribution to the public and private sector of the economy. In August of 1988, he was honored as the Purdue University's Krannert Graduate School of Management's distinguished executive lecturer. In March 1989, he received a Silver Award from Financial World in its CEO of the Decade competition. He was honored as the “CEO of the Decade” in the natural resources industry.
